Producer Overview:
Bodega Convento San Francisco was founded in 1998 by the Pitarch-Rodríguez family in Peñafiel, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. The winery sits within the remains of a 13th-century Franciscan convent: the old granaries and stables were restored for winemaking, and traces of the friars' cloister can still be seen inside. Its Tempranillo comes from old vines, some a century old, grown at 760 to 970 meters on sand, gravel, red clay and limestone.
Wines:
Roble del Convento (Primer Año): The young, lightly oaked Tempranillo of the house.
Crianza: Tempranillo from vines 65 to 105 years old; hand-harvested, macerated for 17 days and aged 20 months in French oak. Great freshness with very subtle fruit.
Selección Especial: Made only in exceptional years from small, very old vineyards at 850 meters; 28 days of maceration and 24 months in French oak.
Also available: Selección Especial La Zapatera and Aldeasoña.
