Situated along the Ruwer river lies the Karlsmühle estate, which was once an old stone mill dating back to the Roman era. After many centuries, the mill and surrounding land was sold to Johann Karls in 1803, and has remained in the hands of the family ever since. Currently, the Karlsmühle winery, restaurant, and hotel are owned and operated by Peter Gieben, who is assisted in the winery by winemaker Sylvia Wells. The vineyards are located on a combination of quartzite, clay, and slate soils at up to 2,300 feet above sea level where there is a large diurnal shift from day to night, ensuring even ripening of the grapes.
